Marbella: history & character

Marbella sits at the heart of Andalusia's Costa del Sol, founded as the Roman settlement of Salduba and reshaped under five centuries of Moorish rule before the Catholic Monarchs took it in 1485 - the surviving town wall and the whitewashed Casco Antiguo around Plaza de los Naranjos still trace the medieval Christian-Moorish layering. From the 1950s onwards, the village was transformed into Europe's reference luxury resort by Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe's Marbella Club, with the Golden Mile and Puerto Banús (1970) cementing the international jet-set identity. The relationship with dogs is unusually pragmatic for southern Spain: the Ayuntamiento operates two officially signposted year-round dog beaches (Pinillo and Ventura del Mar) with freshwater showers and fountains, the 7 km Senda Litoral coastal boardwalk runs uninterrupted from the centre to Puerto Banús, and the large international expat community has built one of Andalusia's densest networks of 24h veterinary care and English-speaking pet sitters. The Andalusian summer demands one critical adaptation: pavement and wooden-boardwalk surfaces hit 50-60°C between 11:00 and 19:00 from June to September, more than enough to burn paw pads in under a minute, so locals walk dogs before 09:30 or after 20:00 from late spring through early autumn.
