Founded by the Phoenicians around 654 BCE as Ibossim, present-day Ibiza (Eivissa in Catalan) passed through Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Arab hands before the Catalan conquest of 1235. Its fortified old town Dalt Vila, UNESCO-listed since 1999, preserves the finest intact Renaissance ramparts in the Mediterranean basin, built in the 16th century to resist Barbary corsairs. Capital of the namesake Balearic island (50,000 year-round residents, multiplied tenfold in July-August), Ibiza is globally known for its clubs but reveals an entirely different face off-season: pine forests, hidden coves, an agricultural interior and a neighbourhood rhythm where dogs accompany their owners to the harbour terraces of Sa Penya and Sa Marina. For the canine traveller, the sweet spot is April-May or October-November: gentle temperatures, beaches still or once again open to dogs, and reasonable rates. Summer (15 May-15 October) imposes a near-total dog ban on beaches and dangerously hot cobblestones in Dalt Vila that can burn paws.
Fortified 16th-century old town UNESCO-listed since 1999, perched on the hill above the harbour. Leashed dogs are welcome in the cobbled alleys, on the panoramic ramparts and around Santa María cathedral, but mind the summer heat: stones absorb heat from 11am onwards, so walk early morning or after 7pm.
The two harbour neighbourhoods of Ibiza Town, hugging the water at the foot of Dalt Vila. Sa Marina lines its terraces facing the yachts, Sa Penya keeps a more working-class character with its fishermen's lanes. Dogs are visible everywhere, local bars (not the clubs) put out water bowls, and the harbour promenade offers a flat sunset stroll.
Protected 3,000-hectare nature reserve in the south of the island, salt flats active since Phoenician times and home to pink flamingos. Flat trails, pine shade in several sections, dogs allowed on leash outside the public swimming areas. Ideal for a long walk from October to April, avoid in midsummer due to the absence of drinkable water on trails.
Official year-round dog beach of Ibiza, on the east coast near Santa Eulalia (20 min by car from Ibiza Town). Golden sand, calm water, and the rare privilege of being able to go with your dog in July without violating the 15 May-15 October ban that hits nearly every other beach on the island.
Small southwestern cove facing the mythical Es Vedrà rock, rising 380m straight out of the sea. Outside summer ban, the coastal path and viewpoint trails tolerate leashed dogs. One of the most beautiful sunsets in the Balearics, and a place that puts the clubbing cliché of the island in perspective.
Three ferry companies (Aquabus, Trasmapi, Balearia) connect Ibiza Town to Formentera in 30-45 min year-round. Dogs travel on the open outdoor deck (free or €5-10 supplement) or in cabins depending on the company. Formentera is markedly more dog-relaxed than Ibiza, several tolerant beaches off-season, ideal for a day away from the summer Ibiza tumult.
