Pet-Friendly Attractions in Formentera

The 1861 lighthouse at the eastern tip of Formentera, perched on a 142 m vertical cliff plunging straight to the Mediterranean. Made famous by Jules Verne's novel Hector Servadac, it is the easternmost point of the Balearics and the first place to catch the sunrise. Leashed dogs are welcome on the entire exterior platform and the surrounding cliff paths; the lighthouse interior is closed to visitors.

The capital of Formentera, with its 1726 fortified white-washed church doubling as a refuge from Barbary corsairs. The main square is the social heart of the island, ringed with cafés that welcome leashed dogs on terraces; the Wednesday and Saturday morning craft market sets up here under shade trees. Church interior is closed to dogs but the exterior staircase and walled garden are dog-friendly.

The most photographed beach in the Balearics, regularly voted Europe's best, runs along the slim Trocadors peninsula at the north of the island with white sand and shallow turquoise water on both sides. Beach access for dogs is banned 1 June-30 September; outside that window leashed dogs may walk the salt-flat causeway and the dirt service road that crosses the peninsula to the Es Pas channel viewpoint.
