Matera, around 60,000 residents in Basilicata, southern Italy, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, occupied since the Paleolithic. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 and European Capital of Culture in 2019, it is famous for the Sassi, two districts of cave dwellings (Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano) carved into the limestone above the Gravina ravine. Once branded the shame of Italy for the poverty of its caves, which were cleared in the 1950s, the city has reinvented itself as a film backdrop (The Passion of the Christ, No Time to Die) and an upscale travel destination. On dogs, Italian rules apply: a leash is required in public spaces, a muzzle must be carried (to be fitted on staff request in transport) and waste must be picked up. The stone lanes and stairways of the Sassi are walkable with a dog but wear paws quickly; the vast Parco della Murgia Materana, across the ravine, by contrast offers superb trails open to leashed dogs.
The more dramatic of the two cave districts, an amphitheatre above the ravine of tiered cave houses and rock-cut churches. Free to wander on a leash at any hour; keep the dog short on the polished stone stairs and bring water, as there is almost no shade.
An 8,000-hectare regional park across the Gravina ravine, dotted with more than 150 rock chapels and prehistoric caves. The trails are open to leashed dogs and make Matera's finest nature outing; set off early, as the limestone plateau is fully exposed to the sun.
A viewpoint on the Murgia plateau offering the postcard panorama over the whole of the Sassi, famous as a film backdrop. Free to reach on a leash, best at sunset; get there by car or via the trail that drops into the ravine and climbs back up, so bring water and good shoes.
The large lively square of the upper town (the Piano), the locals' meeting point and an open balcony over Sasso Barisano. Always open and perfect on a leash, with dog-tolerant cafรฉ terraces and access to the underground Palombaro Lungo cistern (dogs not admitted inside).
A small square perched on the edge of the precipice, dominated by the church of San Pietro Caveoso and the Madonna de Idris rock, one of the most photographed viewpoints in town. The open square is free on a leash at any hour; the rock-church interiors are closed to dogs.
A 13th-century Apulian-Romanesque cathedral set on the city's highest tufa spur between the two Sassi, with a forecourt that drops over the rooftops. The forecourt and surrounding lanes are free on a leash; the cathedral interior is reserved for assistance dogs.
