Yokohama is Japan's great port city on Tokyo Bay, where a compact, walkable bayfront turns stricter Japanese pet rules into an easy win, with leashed dogs welcome across the Minato Mirai promenades and the open-air waterfront complexes. Top spots for pets include the large natural-grass SHIBA to KAZE dog run at Rinko Park, the seaside lawns of Yamashita Park, and the whale's-back rooftop deck of Osanbashi Pier, especially around the open-air Marine & Walk and Red Brick Warehouse on the Shinko waterfront, the Minato Mirai promenades around Sakuragicho, and the Kishamichi harbour walk.

Yokohama grew from a small fishing village into Japan's first major treaty port after 1859, when the country reopened to foreign trade and the harbour filled with Western merchants, consulates and Japan's earliest gas lamps, railways and daily newspaper. That cosmopolitan start still shows in the bluff mansions of Yamate, the largest Chinatown in Japan and the brick customs warehouses of the old port. Rebuilt after the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake and wartime damage, the city reinvented its waterfront as Minato Mirai, a skyline of towers, a giant Ferris wheel and long harbour promenades. For a dog owner Yokohama is one of Japan's easier big cities: its highlights are outdoors and close together along a flat, walkable bayfront, with a large natural-grass dog run at Rinko Park, though the same strict Japanese rules apply, carriers on trains, leashes everywhere and few indoor venues open to pets.
A large roughly 4,000 mยฒ all natural-grass dog run on the bayfront at Rinko Park in Minato Mirai, five minutes from Minatomirai Station. Off-leash inside; it opens on scheduled dates and commonly asks for vaccination proof at entry.
Yokohama's landmark 1930 seafront park, a long ribbon of lawns, rose beds and monuments facing the harbour and the Hikawa Maru liner. Leashed dogs are welcome on the wide promenade; keep them leashed and clean up after them.
A pedestrian promenade laid out on an old harbour railway, crossing three preserved iron bridges between Sakuragicho and Minato Mirai. A flat, scenic on-leash route that links the main dog-friendly seafront sights.
Two restored early-1900s customs warehouses on the Shinko waterfront. The wide brick plazas and outdoor lawns suit a leashed-dog stroll with harbour views; the indoor shops and halls are generally off-limits to pets.
The international passenger pier, whose undulating wooden roof nicknamed the whale's back is a free open-air deck with views of the Minato Mirai skyline. A favourite leashed-dog walk, best at sunset; little shade, so bring water.
A superb traditional Japanese garden in Honmoku, with ponds, a pagoda and relocated historic houses, glorious in autumn. Like most classic Japanese gardens it does not admit dogs, worth noting so you do not arrive with a pet.
