Yokohama

A large roughly 4,000 m² all natural-grass dog run on the bayfront at Rinko Park in Minato Mirai, five minutes from Minatomirai Station. Off-leash inside; it opens on scheduled dates and commonly asks for vaccination proof at entry.

Yokohama's landmark 1930 seafront park, a long ribbon of lawns, rose beds and monuments facing the harbour and the Hikawa Maru liner. Leashed dogs are welcome on the wide promenade; keep them leashed and clean up after them.

A pedestrian promenade laid out on an old harbour railway, crossing three preserved iron bridges between Sakuragicho and Minato Mirai. A flat, scenic on-leash route that links the main dog-friendly seafront sights.

Two restored early-1900s customs warehouses on the Shinko waterfront. The wide brick plazas and outdoor lawns suit a leashed-dog stroll with harbour views; the indoor shops and halls are generally off-limits to pets.

The international passenger pier, whose undulating wooden roof nicknamed the whale's back is a free open-air deck with views of the Minato Mirai skyline. A favourite leashed-dog walk, best at sunset; little shade, so bring water.

A superb traditional Japanese garden in Honmoku, with ponds, a pagoda and relocated historic houses, glorious in autumn. Like most classic Japanese gardens it does not admit dogs, worth noting so you do not arrive with a pet.
