Whitby is one of England's most dog-loving seaside towns, a historic North Yorkshire fishing port where dogs are welcome across the abbey headland, along the cliff paths and in most old-town pubs, and travel free on the Esk Valley Line train. Top spots for pets include the ruined Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff, the climb up the 199 Steps, and the year-round dog beaches at Tate Hill, Sandsend and Runswick Bay, especially around the old town around Church Street and the harbour, the West Cliff, and the abbey headland above the 199 Steps.

Whitby, a North Yorkshire fishing port set at the mouth of the River Esk, owes its fame to the ruined abbey perched on the East Cliff, founded in 657 by St Hilda and site of the Synod of Whitby in 664. A whaling town and shipbuilding port in the 18th century, it was where Captain James Cook learned his trade as a sailor, and his ships, including the Endeavour, were built here. In the 19th century Whitby jet became fashionable mourning jewellery, worn as far as Queen Victoria's court, and the abbey's Gothic silhouette gave Bram Stoker the setting for Dracula. For travellers with a dog, Whitby is one of England's most welcoming coastal breaks: a compact old town on either side of the swing bridge, a pub culture where dogs are at home, the cliffs and Cleveland Way paths within easy reach, and the Esk Valley train from Middlesbrough carrying dogs free.
The Gothic abbey ruins crown the East Cliff. Well-behaved dogs on short leads welcome in the grounds (English Heritage), not inside the visitor centre.
The iconic stairway climbing from the old town to St Mary's Church and the abbey. Open air, dogs on a lead, benches for a breather along the way.
The working harbour at the heart of town, with fishing boats and the swing bridge. Open air and dog-friendly; many boat trips take dogs on deck.
A small sheltered sandy cove below the East Cliff, the town beach that stays open to dogs all year (on a lead from 1 May to 30 September).
A landscaped town park in the heart of Whitby, with paths, a lily pool and a rock garden. Dogs on a lead throughout the park.
The national coast path along the cliffs between Whitby and Sandsend, with spectacular sea views. On a lead near the unfenced cliff edges.
