Whitby sits on a spectacular stretch of the North Yorkshire coast, but its beaches carry a real seasonal dog ban that you must plan around. Under North Yorkshire Council's Dog Control Public Spaces Protection Order, dogs are excluded from the signposted main section of Whitby's West Cliff beach (Whitby Sands) from 1 May to 30 September, and the same applies to the main section of Sandsend beach near the village. Breaching the order can bring a fixed penalty of ยฃ100. The good news is that the sheltered Tate Hill Sands below the abbey headland stays open to dogs all year (on a lead in the summer season), the outer stretches of Sandsend are dog-friendly year-round, and nearby Runswick Bay welcomes dogs all year with no seasonal restriction. Always read the signs on arrival, as the exact boundaries are marked on the beach.
