Bringing your dog into Great Britain (post-Brexit)
Since Brexit, Great Britain no longer accepts the EU Pet Passport for entry. Dogs arriving from the EU need a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an official vet within 10 days of travel, plus a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination, and dogs also need an approved tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment recorded 24 to 120 hours before arrival. A GB pet passport issued in Great Britain is also valid. Arrange this with your vet before you leave, as it cannot be done on arrival.
Planning around the beach dog rules
Whitby's main West Cliff beach (Whitby Sands) and the main section of Sandsend are dog exclusion zones from 1 May to 30 September under North Yorkshire Council's PSPO, with a £100 fine for breaches. Plan around it: Tate Hill Sands stays open all year (on a lead in summer), the outer stretches of Sandsend are year-round, and Runswick Bay has no ban at all. Off-season, from October to April, the main beaches reopen to dogs. Always read the signs on arrival, as the exclusion boundaries are marked on the beach.

Whitby has a cool oceanic climate tempered by the North Sea: mild but breezy, with winters usually around 5 to 7°C and summers around 17 to 18°C at their warmest, and a stiff coastal wind common year-round. Spring and autumn are lovely for a dog, with quieter streets and the main beaches open to dogs outside the summer ban. If you come in July or August, use Runswick Bay or Tate Hill and avoid the busiest crush of the Goth Weekends if you have a nervous dog.
