Rouen's Gothic cathedral, completed over six centuries from the 12th to the 16th, is one of the tallest Gothic structures in France and the subject of Monet's famous series of paintings. Dogs are not admitted inside the cathedral, but the vast square in front - Place de la Cathédrale - is fully pedestrianised and a pleasure to linger in with a dog. The west facade at different times of day recreates Monet's light studies live. The cathedral illumination at night is spectacular from the terrace of nearby brasseries.
💡 The Monet series of 30+ paintings of this same facade is on permanent display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris - worth viewing before or after the trip.
