Caen, the historic capital of Lower Normandy, owes its existence to William the Conqueror, who made it his ducal residence in the mid-11th century. He raised the Château de Caen, one of Europe's largest medieval enclosures, and with his queen Matilda of Flanders founded the two Romanesque abbeys that still frame the city: the Abbaye aux Hommes (Saint-Étienne) and the Abbaye aux Dames (Sainte-Trinité), their respective tombs. Caen was almost flattened during the Battle of Normandy in 1944 — the Allies bombed the city for two months after D-Day — but the medieval core around the castle and the two abbeys were miraculously spared or patiently restored in pale Caen limestone. For the dog traveller, the city offers a walkable centre, vast lawns within the castle ramparts, a 17-hectare bird park (Colline aux Oiseaux), the towpath of the Canal de Caen à la Mer (14 km to Ouistreham and the Channel) and direct access to the D-Day landing beaches 30 km west and to Bayeux 30 km north-west.
