Rhodes is a relaxed, dog-tolerant Greek island where the main challenges are summer heat and the ferry-and-beach rules rather than hostility to dogs. Plan around the climate, know the beach law, and you and your dog will fit right in.
July and August highs hit around 31 C with intense sun and little shade in the open. Walk dogs before 09:00 or after sunset, test cobbles and asphalt with your hand (if it is too hot for you, it burns paws), never leave a dog in a car, and carry water everywhere. Rodini Park's shade is the best midday refuge.
Dogs are allowed on unorganised beaches and may swim, but must be leashed out of the water; organised sunbed beaches and Blue Flag beaches usually exclude pets. On ferries to and from Rhodes, dogs must be leashed and muzzled, stay in pet areas or pet cabins, and are barred from indoor lounges. Book pet cabins in advance.
Greece is in the EU, so EU-registered pets need a valid EU pet passport, an ISO microchip and a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel, with no quarantine and no tapeworm treatment required. Non-EU pets (UK, US and others) need an EU Health Certificate and possibly a rabies titre test. Confirm the latest rules before you book.
Late spring (May and early June) and early autumn (September and October) are ideal for a dog: warm but not punishing, sea still swimmable, and far fewer crowds. Peak July and August are best avoided for active dogs given the heat. Winters are mild and quiet, with most outdoor terraces still open.
