Rennes Métropole publishes the city's leash rules and waste-collection requirements on its municipal site. French national law requires every dog owner in public to carry up to 1.5 m leash; category 1 and 2 dogs (Pit Bull-type, Rottweiler, etc.) must hold the city-hall permit, muzzle and special insurance. The Vilaine river crosses central Rennes east to west and has a continuous towpath on both banks, with the Mail François Mitterrand promenade and the Quai Émile Zola flat and shaded, ideal for long leashed walks. Heading west out of the city, the towpath joins the Canal d'Ille-et-Rance heading north toward Saint-Malo (84 km of dog-friendly continuous flat path).

The heart of medieval Rennes around Place Sainte-Anne and Rue Saint-Michel (known locally as Rue de la Soif) is the city's lively nightlife district, with half-timbered houses from the 15th-17th centuries that survived the 1720 fire. The pedestrian streets get extremely loud Thursday to Saturday evenings 22:00–02:00, plan walks here in the morning or during the day with noise-sensitive dogs.
