Founded on the banks of the Loire in the 1st century by the Romans as Portus Namnetum, Nantes rose to prominence in the 15th century as the seat of the Dukes of Brittany, whose castle — today one of France's most visited monuments — still dominates the city centre. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the city prospered as France's largest slave-trading port, a dark chapter confronted with remarkable honesty in the Château's history museum. Revolution, Vendée wars, and reconstruction shaped the modern city. Today Nantes is regularly voted France's most liveable city — a reputation built on green spaces, a creative cultural scene anchored by Le Voyage à Nantes, and a culture of welcome that genuinely extends to pets.
Nantes' favourite dog park has an official off-leash caniparc zone and sweeping lawns where dogs run freely in designated areas. Shaded alleys and a rose garden make it the ideal walk before or after exploring the city centre.
The outdoor esplanade of the famous giant machines — including the 12-metre Grand Éléphant — is fully accessible to dogs on leash. Dogs cannot ride the Éléphant, but watching its promenades from the quayside with your dog is an unforgettable experience.
The moat gardens and rampart walk of this 15th-century fortress are free to access and dog-friendly on leash. The museum inside does not accept dogs, but the exterior grounds alone offer a very rewarding visit with panoramic city views.
A Japanese garden on an Erdre River island in the heart of Nantes, with wooden bridges, red pavilions, and koi ponds. Dogs are welcome on leash on the winding footpaths — one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
6 km of renovated riverside promenades along the Loire, linking the Hangar à Bananes to the Trentemoult village, with public art, riverside bars, and the Machines de l'Île. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout.
A vast natural meadow on Île Beaulieu along the Loire, with a new caniparc that opened in January 2025. The wild grassy expanses are ideal for free-running sessions with Loire river views.
