Vannes, founded by the Gaulish Veneti and named Darioritum by the Romans in the 1st century, was the Armorican capital where Julius Caesar defeated the Venetian fleet in 56 BC. Becoming the capital of the Duchy of Brittany in the 15th century, it was in its Cordeliers convent that the États de Bretagne ratified the union of the duchy with France in 1532. The 13th-to-16th-century medieval walls, built on the Mené hill on a Roman foundation, survive at 75% over about 900 metres, making Vannes the best-preserved fortified enclosure in Brittany. Today a city of around 53,000 (200,000 in the Golfe du Morbihan-Vannes agglomeration), Vannes is the gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan and its 42 inhabited islands, 2h35 TGV from Paris-Montparnasse and 1h20 by car from the Nantes and Rennes airports.
