Getting Around Hallstatt with a Dog

The historic Hallstatt boat 'Stefanie' connects Hallstatt Bahnhof (where the ÖBB train stops) with Hallstatt Markt across the lake — a 12-minute crossing that is the classic first impression of the village. Boats run synchronised with arriving and departing trains, every 30 minutes in peak season. Leashed dogs ride free; the open deck is the best spot for nervous dogs to acclimatise.

Hallstatt Bahnhof sits on the east shore of the lake on the Attnang-Puchheim–Stainach-Irdning line, with hourly REX/regional service connecting to Salzburg (3 h via Attnang) and direct trains to Bad Ischl, Linz and Graz. Small dogs in a carrier ride free on ÖBB; larger dogs travel leashed and muzzled with a half-price adult ticket. The station is unstaffed — buy tickets via the ÖBB app or vending machine.

Salzburg Airport (SZG, W.A. Mozart) is the nearest international airport, 80 km north-west of Hallstatt (~90 min by car, ~3 h by combined Postbus 150 + ÖBB train + Hallstatt boat). The airport follows EU pet rules: microchip, EU pet passport, rabies vaccination. Postbus 150 from the airport to Bad Ischl accepts leashed dogs for free in the open luggage area at the driver's discretion.
