Dog-Friendly Swimming Spots on Lake Hallstatt

The official municipal lido at the south end of the village offers grass lawns, changing rooms and a roped-off shallow swimming area. Dogs are NOT allowed in the official bathing zone June–early September for hygiene reasons, but the unfenced gravel shoreline immediately south of the lido (along the path to Obertraun) is the most popular unofficial dog-swim spot, with shallow entry and clear water.

The 5.5 km East Shore hiking trail from Hallstatt Bahnhof to Obertraun passes a series of small gravel coves and tiny natural beaches that are entirely dog-accessible — no swimming restrictions apply here as these are not official Strandbäder. Cool shaded forest path, frequent water access points, and far less crowded than the village shore. The Untersee Bay near Obertraun is the most popular dog-swim point.

The southern end of Vorderer Gosausee, beyond the official swimming buoys, is one of the few Salzkammergut lakes that explicitly allows dog swimming. Crystal-clear glacier-fed water (typically 16–19 °C even in August), shallow stony entry and the iconic Dachstein backdrop. A quieter alternative to Hallstatt's lakeside when the village is at peak day-tripper capacity.
