Dog-Friendly Attractions in Hallstatt

The Skywalk Welterbeblick is the dramatic cantilevered viewing platform above the salt mine entrance, with a 360° panorama over Hallstatt, the lake and the Dachstein. Reached by the dog-friendly Salzberg funicular (€20 return, dog free), it's the single best viewpoint in the village. Below in the Marktplatz, leashed dogs are welcome throughout the UNESCO core, the Lutheran church courtyard and the café terraces.

The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car climbs from Obertraun (608 m) to the 2,109 m Krippenstein plateau in three stages, with leashed dogs accepted on all sections (€5 dog ticket return). At the top: the iconic Five Fingers viewing platform (free, dog-friendly), the Welterbespirale and access to the long Heilbronner Trail. The summit air is 15–20 °C cooler than the valley — a lifesaver in a summer heatwave.

The 12th-century Catholic parish church St Michael, perched on the cliff above the village, contains the famous Beinhaus (Charnel House) where 1,200 painted skulls of villagers are arranged — a unique tradition that arose because Hallstatt's cliff-side cemetery has no room to expand. The church grounds and the cliffside walk up are fully dog-accessible on leash; the Beinhaus chapel interior asks dogs to wait outside.
