Getxo is Bilbao's coastal neighbour on the Bay of Biscay, 78,000 people settled on the cliffs and beaches at the mouth of the Nervión. In the 19th century the golden age of Basque industry drew the great Bilbao bourgeoisie here, who built themselves a crown of Romantic and Modernist villas in the Neguri district, still standing and still private. In 1893 Alberto de Palacio inaugurated the Vizcaya Bridge, the world's first transporter bridge linking Getxo to Portugalete by a suspended gondola, listed UNESCO World Heritage in 2006 as the only Spanish industrial monument. The Puerto Viejo de Algorta, a medieval fishing port, has become a stepped pintxo district, and the rocky promontory of Punta Galea offers 6 km of coastal trail above the Cantabrian Sea. Getxo has been officially dog-friendly since 2017, the Vizcaya Bridge admits dogs up to 40 kg in the gondola, and the City Council has signposted 17 dog-recreation zones across the municipality.
The world's first transporter bridge, designed by Alberto de Palacio and inaugurated in 1893, listed UNESCO in 2006 as the only Spanish entry in the Industrial Heritage category. Officially dog-friendly since December 2017, dogs up to 40 kg admitted in the gondola's lateral passenger compartment.
