Pet-Friendly Transport in Getxo

Metro Bilbao Line 1 connects Bilbao centre to Getxo's Algorta district in around 22 minutes and continues to Plentzia. The published rule allows dogs up to 8 kg, leashed and carried in arms by the owner, while certified assistance dogs are admitted with no weight cap. A May 2026 City Council motion called on the regional CTB to lift the 8 kg cap, but the rule is still in force at writing.

The UNESCO World Heritage transporter bridge connecting Getxo to Portugalete across the Nervión estuary, dog-friendly since December 2017. The lateral passenger compartment of the gondola accepts dogs up to 40 kg with a leash or in a carrier, the crossing takes 1 minute 30 seconds and operates 24h/365.

The provincial Bizkaibus network covers Getxo and the wider Bilbao metropolitan area. The standard pet rule is dogs under 8 kg in a closed cage or carrier, with no provision for larger dogs unless they are certified assistance animals.
