Antibes was founded by the Phocaeans in the 6th century BC under the name Antipolis (the city facing Nice) and remains one of the oldest ports on the Côte d'Azur. Roman, then Genoese, then French from 1481, it gained its sea-facing Vauban ramparts in the 17th century. In the 19th century, Russian and British aristocrats made it a winter retreat, and Juan-les-Pins invented the summer-resort model around its 1909 casino. Picasso worked for a few months in 1946 at the Château Grimaldi, which today houses the museum that bears his name. For travelling pets, France requires the EU pet passport, ISO microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. Dogs on leads are welcome on the ramparts, at Port Vauban, in the Marché Provençal and along the Cap d'Antibes coastal trail year-round; municipal beaches (La Salis, La Garoupe, La Gravette) ban dogs from 15 June to 15 September.
The Vieil Antibes, inside the Vauban ramparts, is a maze of cobbled lanes around Cours Masséna and the Château Grimaldi. Leashed dogs are entirely at home here, with terraces everywhere, public fountains and a natural 45-minute circuit along the ramparts and Port Vauban.
The 5 km coastal trail around the rocky tip of Cap d'Antibes is one of the finest dog walks on the Riviera. The official tourism site explicitly welcomes leashed dogs. Allow 1 to 2 hours at normal pace and wear sturdy shoes: the rock is slippery when wet.
Under the iron canopy of Cours Masséna, the Marché Provençal opens every morning except Monday in winter and daily in summer: Var vegetables, fish, cheese, flowers, socca and tapenade. Leashed dogs are welcome between the stalls and the vendors are entirely accustomed to them.
One of Europe's largest yacht marinas, including the famous Quai des Milliardaires. The flat promenade around the basin makes a 30-minute walk with a dog at any time of year, and the view from the Bastion Saint-André across the bay to the Alps is worth the detour.
The seafront umbrella-pine grove behind the Juan-les-Pins casino is the daily walking ground of local owners: flat sandy paths, deep shade and bins at every entrance. Closed during the Jazz à Juan festival in mid-July.
The long sandy crescent between the Old Town and the Cap, with the finest view of Antibes' ramparts. Closed to dogs from 15 June to 15 September, in the off-season it becomes one of the best dog-walking beaches on the Riviera, especially at dawn.
