Vichy sits on the banks of the Allier river in France's Auvergne region and has drawn visitors to its naturally sparkling mineral springs since Roman times. Its golden age came under the Second Empire: Emperor Napoleon III visited repeatedly from the 1860s, commissioning parks, promenades and villas that turned the town into the most fashionable watering place in France, the Queen of spa towns. The Belle Epoque added a dazzling layer of Art Nouveau and eclectic architecture, from the covered galleries of the Parc des Sources to the opera house. The springs also gave the world the pastilles de Vichy, octagonal mineral sweets still made locally. Damming the Allier created a lake of more than 100 hectares at the town's edge. In 2021 Vichy was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.
Vichy's oldest park, created in 1812, framed by the wrought-iron Art Nouveau covered galleries and the centrepiece of the UNESCO listing. Leashed dogs welcome; the galleries offer prized midday shade. Park under phased renovation through 2026.
An English-style landscaped park laid out under Napoleon III along the Allier lakefront, lined with eclectic Second Empire villas. Leashed dogs welcome; it connects straight to the lakeside promenade loop.
A roughly 6 km flat loop around the dammed Lac d'Allier, taking in Parc Napoleon III, the lakeside esplanade and the pont-barrage. The best long dog walk in Vichy, though dogs are barred from the swimming beaches.
A neoclassical spring pavilion on the Allier bank dispensing Vichy's most famous naturally sparkling mineral water for free. Open-air, so leashed dogs can join you; use the still springs for their bowl.
The 700 m wrought-iron Art Nouveau covered promenade created in 1901 to 1902, linking the Hall des Sources to the opera. Leashed dogs welcome under the galleries, prized for midday shade; the thermal buildings they connect remain off-limits.
A landmark Art Nouveau opera and congress palace, formerly the Grand Casino, whose Belle Epoque façade is a highlight of the UNESCO townscape. Admire it from the street with your dog; the interior does not admit dogs, nor do the Vichy Célestins spa or the Hall des Sources.
