Zell am See

The 2,000 m home mountain, with a summit panorama of more than thirty 3,000 m peaks above the lake. Dogs ride with their own ticket, muzzled and leashed in the cabin, then walk the summit roads and trails on the lead; muzzles are sold (15 euros) or rented at the valley station.

The turquoise glacial lake is walked via the esplanade, the Elisabethpark and the roughly 11 km loop through Thumersbach. Dog swimming is allowed outside the marked lidos; the boat fleet takes muzzled dogs (5 euros for the panorama cruise, 3 euros for the crossing).

The town's official dog zone on the northern shore by the protected reed belt: the only place in Zell am See where a dog legally runs free of leash and muzzle. A lovely trail runs along the reserve next door, with lake access for a dip.

A 32 m deep glacial gorge in Kaprun whose wooden walkways above the roaring Kapruner Ache are walked with a leashed dog (open roughly May to October). At the top, the Klammsee loop and a spacious dog park where dogs can run free.

Salzburg's glacier lifts dogs (daily, 7-day or annual dog tickets) to the 3,029 m platform, muzzled and leashed in the gondolas. Welcome in the mountain restaurants, banned from the ski pistes; expect snow even in high summer.

Zell am See's compact medieval heart: the town square, the Romanesque St. Hippolyt church and the 12th-century Vogtturm are covered in a ten-minute leashed stroll between terraces. Many cafés tolerate calm dogs, ask before stepping in.
