Innsbruck: geschiedenis en karakter

Innsbruck, founded around 1187 at the confluence of the Inn and Sill rivers, was for three centuries the capital of Tyrol and Emperor Maximilian I's favourite residence (he commissioned the Goldenes Dachl, the gilded oriel of 1500). Today a university city of 130,000 inhabitants, the cultural capital of Tyrol and a two-time winter Olympic city (1964, 1976), Innsbruck combines a Renaissance cobbled historic core with a spectacular Alpine setting, the Nordkette range at 2,300 m is reachable by cable car from Congress Square in 25 minutes. For dog owners, Innsbruck is one of the most practical Alpine cities: free public transport across the entire IVB network (trams + buses + Hungerburgbahn funicular), 8 urban forests within walking distance, dog-friendly cable cars up to 2,256 m (Hafelekar), Tyrolean café and Gasthaus tradition that naturally welcomes dogs, and a 24/7 veterinary clinic (AniCura) right in the centre. The Austrian leash season (1 March-31 July) protects ground-nesting birds on hiking trails; the rest of the year, dogs run off-leash on mountains with proper recall.
