Kitzbühel

The 700-year-old walled heart, with pastel facades, wrought-iron signs and St Catherine's church. Compact and mostly traffic-calmed, it is explored entirely on leash; in season many shops put out water bowls.

The Hahnenkammbahn lifts dogs for free to the panoramic trails at 1,700 m and the start hut of the world's most famous downhill. In summer and autumn you can walk the Streif down, dog on leash, from the Mausefalle to the finish slope.

One of the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps, a half-hour walk from the centre. Dogs are welcome on leash around the lake and its 2 km loop; the paid lido is off-limits in season, and the nearby Gieringer Weiher is the real dog swim.

The pyramid facing the Hahnenkamm, served by the Hornbahn where dogs also ride free. Flower-lined trails around the Alpenhaus and a 360-degree panorama over the Wilder Kaiser and the Hohe Tauern.

Austria's highest game park, at 1,100 m above Aurach: deer, ibex, lynx and marmots along a panoramic loop. Dogs admitted on a short leash, on the paths only and at the owner's responsibility near mother animals.

In the town's oldest building, the museum tells the story of mining silver, the birth of Austrian skiing and local painter Alfons Walde. Dogs cannot enter: hand yours to a sitter for an hour and come back out through the Vorderstadt.
