Paris is a city of dogs, and Parisians have always known it. The capital is home to over 500,000 dogs, roughly one for every eight residents. This long-standing relationship between Paris and its animals stretches back to 18th-century café culture, when dogs lounged on banquettes beside their owners. Despite being the world's most visited city, Paris retains this intimacy: dogs are welcome in most brasseries, shops and designated off-leash garden zones. The Bois de Boulogne (846 ha) and Bois de Vincennes (995 ha) provide two vast green lungs, busy with off-leash dogs every morning.
846 hectares of forest on Paris's western edge. Many areas allow dogs to run freely in the morning. The Lac Inférieur and Pré Catelan are essential stops for a long morning walk.
Paris's most dog-friendly neighbourhood. Independent shops, café terraces and vet pharmacies on every street. Place des Vosges is stunning but dogs must be kept on leads inside.
One of Paris's most beautiful gardens, but dogs are not permitted inside. Walk around it via Boulevard Saint-Michel or enjoy the pedestrian streets of the Latin Quarter with your pet instead.
Parisians' favourite canal for a relaxed stroll. The shaded quaysides are perfect for a dog walk, café terraces and delis line the route. Avoid peak weekend crowds.
The Champ-de-Mars lawns welcome dogs on leads, with a guaranteed unbeatable view of the Eiffel Tower. The tower itself is off-limits to animals, but the gardens make for an iconic dog walk.
Montmartre's cobbled streets are perfect for a dog walk. The steps up to the Sacré-Cœur are accessible with a dog, the view is worth the effort. Square Louise Michel below is a good spot to rest.
