Tossa de Mar

A twelfth-century fortified enclosure, a listed monument, rising on the Mont Guardí headland. Its cobbled lanes, ramparts and cylindrical towers are freely walked in the open air with a leashed dog, with sweeping views over the bay.

The lighthouse crowning the Vila Vella and the Municipal Museum housed in the old governor's house, Spain's first museum of contemporary art (1935). The lighthouse esplanade outside is open on a leash, but dogs are not allowed inside the museum.

The bay's two sandy beaches, the broad Platja Gran below the ramparts and the Mar Menuda cove popular with divers. Dogs are banned on these guarded beaches from Easter week to the end of September; off-season, access is tolerated.

The old customs officers' path following the Costa Brava cliffs to hidden coves such as Cala Bona and Cala Pola. Open to leashed dogs year-round and shaded by pines, it is Tossa's finest dog walk.

Wild coves north of Tossa, tucked into the pine woods and reached by the camí de ronda or a dirt road. Away from the town beaches, off-season they offer quiet swims where leashed dogs are better tolerated.
