Beach Calendar: Know the Bathing Season Dates
Under the Santander municipal animal ordinance, dogs are banned from the city beaches (Sardinero, Magdalena, El Camello, Mataleñas) during the bathing season, typically 1 May to 30 September, during bathing hours. Outside that window dogs are permitted on lead. For guaranteed year-round access, head to Playa de Loredo across the bay (signposted dog section) or Playa de Berria near Santoña.
Brittany Ferries to the UK: Book the Pet Cabin Early
Brittany Ferries sails dogs from Santander to Plymouth (about 20 h) and Portsmouth (about 28–32 h). Pet-friendly cabins are limited and book out months ahead in summer, alternatives are on-board kennels or remaining in the vehicle (vehicle access is pre-scheduled and limited). For UK entry, an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or GB pet travel document is required; rabies + microchip + tapeworm rules apply, plan with your vet at least one month before sailing.
PPP (Potentially Dangerous Dog) Rules
Spain maintains a national register of breeds classified as 'Potentially Dangerous' (PPP). These breeds must always be leashed and muzzled in public spaces in Santander, including inside the off-leash zone of Parque de las Llamas. Owners must carry their PPP licence. Check with the Spanish authorities if your breed may be classified before travelling.

- 1.Santander's Cantabrian climate is mild and rainy, even in summer. Carry a small dog towel; the 'orbayu' (light persistent drizzle) is a near-daily reality.
- 2.The 8 km seafront walk from the Estación Marítima to the Faro de Cabo Mayor is the single best dog itinerary in the city, plan a full half-day for it.
- 3.Santander airport (SDR) is small and dog-friendly: Iberia, Vueling and Ryanair operate from here and accept small dogs in cabin on most domestic and short-haul EU routes (always verify with the carrier).
- 4.Brittany Ferries pet protocols change occasionally, re-check the current rules (pet cabin vs kennel vs vehicle) two weeks before sailing and bring printed AHC/GB paperwork.
