Beach Calendar: Know the Bathing Season Dates
Under the Santander municipal animal ordinance, dogs are banned from the city beaches (Sardinero, Magdalena, El Camello, Mataleñas) during the bathing season, typically 1 May to 30 September, during bathing hours. Outside that window dogs are permitted on lead. For guaranteed year-round access, head to Playa de Loredo across the bay (signposted dog section) or Playa de Berria near Santoña.
Brittany Ferries to the UK: Book the Pet Cabin Early
Brittany Ferries sails dogs from Santander to Plymouth (about 20 h) and Portsmouth (about 28–32 h). Pet-friendly cabins are limited and book out months ahead in summer, alternatives are on-board kennels or remaining in the vehicle (vehicle access is pre-scheduled and limited). For UK entry, an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) or GB pet travel document is required; rabies + microchip + tapeworm rules apply, plan with your vet at least one month before sailing.
PPP (Potentially Dangerous Dog) Rules
Spain maintains a national register of breeds classified as 'Potentially Dangerous' (PPP). These breeds must always be leashed and muzzled in public spaces in Santander, including inside the off-leash zone of Parque de las Llamas. Owners must carry their PPP licence.
