Olbia, on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, carries the idea of prosperity in its Greek name: a Phoenician then Roman port known as Terranova, the town has always commanded the gateway to Gallura and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Around it, Bronze Age nuraghi recall a far older settlement, while the Romanesque basilica of San Simplicio, built in local granite in the 11th century, has watched over the centre for nearly a thousand years. Today, with its airport and ferry harbour, Olbia is the main gateway to northern Sardinia and the nearby Costa Smeralda. The Corso Umberto, a lively pedestrian street full of cafes, runs from the old core to the harbour facing the island of Tavolara. For anyone travelling with a dog, Olbia combines a flat, easy town, sandy beaches such as Pittulongu and Porto Istana, and prehistoric nuragic sites in open country just minutes away.
The main pedestrian street of the centre, lined with cafes, shops and palm trees, linking the old core to the harbour. You walk it on the leash and many terraces welcome dogs.
An 11th-century Romanesque church in granite, the most important medieval monument in Gallura. Dogs are not allowed inside; the square and forecourt can be seen on the leash.
A long, pale-sand beach a few minutes north of town, facing Tavolara island. Swimming and play outside the summer season; in summer, look for the dog-permitted sections.
A string of white-sand coves with turquoise water about fifteen minutes away, facing Tavolara. A superb setting for a waterside walk outside the peak-crowd months.
A Bronze Age nuragic settlement perched on the Cabu Abbas hill, overlooking the gulf of Olbia. An open-air site reached on foot, dogs welcome on the leash along the trail.
A museum set on a small island in the harbour, showing Roman shipwrecks and the history of ancient Terranova. An indoor space where dogs are not admitted; the surrounding quays can be walked on the leash.
