Gran Canaria

The vast field of golden dunes at the southern tip of the island, a protected special nature reserve. The sensitive dune core and the beach ban dogs, but the perimeter promenades and boardwalk viewpoints, especially near the Maspalomas lighthouse, give leashed dogs spectacular views. Sunset here is unforgettable.

The canal-laced fishing village nicknamed the little Venice of Gran Canaria, on the south-west coast. Whitewashed houses draped in bougainvillea, footbridges and a marina make an entirely outdoor stroll, freely walkable on lead. The Friday market draws the whole island.

The historic quarter of Las Palmas, where Columbus is said to have stayed in 1492. Cobbled streets, the Plaza de Santa Ana with its bronze dogs, the facade of the Catedral de Santa Ana and the colonial Casa de Colón form a free outdoor circuit. Leashed dogs are welcome on all the streets and squares, but not inside the museums or the cathedral.

The 3 km urban beach of Las Palmas, one of Europe's finest city beaches, sheltered by a natural rock bar. The beach itself does not allow dogs, but the 3 km pedestrian promenade running its length is the capital's leashed-walking spine, busy from dawn to dusk.

The 80 m volcanic monolith that is the island's emblem, at around 1,700 m above the village of Tejeda. The short but spectacular trail from the La Goleta car park is accessible to leashed dogs and crosses open pine and rock country, with sweeping views to Teide on Tenerife. The interior is several degrees cooler than the coast.

One of the five official dog beaches opened by the municipality of Mogán in February 2026, on the sunny south-west coast. Los Frailes is the most open: dogs are allowed across the whole beach at all hours, with no time restriction. With water swimmable all winter, it is the island's easiest full-day dog beach.
