Bodrum stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, the Carian city that gave birth to the historian Herodotus and where King Mausolus raised his monumental tomb in the 4th century BC, the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. In the 15th century the Knights of St John reused its stones to build the Castle of St Peter, which still guards the harbour entrance. Long a modest town of fishermen and sponge divers on the Aegean coast of Muğla province, Bodrum transformed from the 1970s into one of Turkey's most fashionable beach resorts, nicknamed the Turkish Saint-Tropez. Today its marina, whitewashed bougainvillea-draped houses, lively nightlife and the coves of the peninsula draw a cosmopolitan crowd. Travelling here with a dog calls for care: summer heat is intense and most developed beaches restrict animal access.
The 15th-century fortress of the Knights of St John, built at the harbour entrance and now home to the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Pets are not allowed inside the museum grounds, but the harbourside promenade that skirts it is easily walked on leash.
The remains of King Mausolus's monumental tomb, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, now an open-air archaeological site in the heart of town. As at Turkey's protected ancient sites, dogs are generally not permitted inside.
The yacht harbour and lively waterfront, lined with sailing boats, cafés and the famous Bar Street. The long quayside promenade is well suited to an evening leashed stroll once the heat eases.
The row of stone windmills perched on the ridge between Bodrum and Gümbet, relics of Ottoman times when grain was milled here. The open-air site offers a panoramic view over both bays and can be visited on leash, ideally at sunset.
The large sandy beach closest to Bodrum, busy and lined with clubs and watersports. Like most developed resort beaches, it restricts dog access in high season, so aim instead for a quiet cove away from the managed areas.
A quieter bay west of Bodrum, known for its tamarisk trees, tangerine groves and windsurfing. Its managed beach limits dog access, though the less crowded far ends sometimes tolerate a leashed dog off-season.
