Nice, the capital of the French Riviera and France's fifth-largest city, has been a haven for well-heeled travellers and their pets since the 19th century, when English aristocrats wintering on the Côte d'Azur made the Promenade des Anglais their daily constitutional. Today the city's 342,000 inhabitants share it with a substantial dog population drawn by the Mediterranean climate, the long pebbly beach and the easy access to the hills of the Alpes-Maritimes. Dogs are accepted in the city's many outdoor café terraces and restaurants; the old town (Vieux-Nice) is lively and navigable year-round with a well-socialised dog.
The iconic 7km seafront promenade is one of Europe's great dog walks. Wide, flat, sea-breezy and busy with locals at all hours. Dogs on lead; the pebble beach is accessible but mostly without dedicated dog areas in summer.
The hilltop park overlooking the old town and the sea is a favourite with Nice dog owners. Shaded paths, a waterfall, open terraces and sweeping views, and almost always a breeze even in July. Reach it on foot from the old port or via the free lift.
The baroque old town, all orange and yellow ochre façades, flower market and Socca stalls, is navigable with a calm dog. Most café terraces welcome dogs and the streets are narrow but not overwhelmingly so outside August.
The 340-hectare forested park east of the city is Nice's best escape from the heat. Pine forest trails, sea views and a military fort at the summit. Dogs off-lead in most areas; very popular with local runners and their dogs at weekends.
Nice's museums are not accessible to dogs. The Matisse museum gardens (outside) are dog-friendly and offer a pleasant stroll in the Cimiez neighbourhood.
