Oviedo, capital of Asturias, watches over the green interior of northern Spain, set against the mountains rather than the sea. Cradle of the medieval Asturian kingdom, it keeps a jewel of pre-Romanesque art listed by UNESCO: on Monte Naranco, Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo raise their ninth-century vaults above the town. Below, the Gothic Cathedral of San Salvador presides over an old quarter of cobbled lanes, squares and the Fontán market. Oviedo is also a city of cider: the sidrerías of Calle Gascona pour their cider from a height on terraces very welcoming to dogs, and a statue of Woody Allen recalls his fondness for the place. Its oceanic climate, mild and damp, brings cool summers that are comfortable for a dog, while the Picos de Europa and the Asturian beaches are within reach as a day trip.
A Gothic cathedral at the heart of the old town, home to the pre-Romanesque Cámara Santa listed by UNESCO. The interior is closed to dogs, but the square and surrounding lanes are easily explored on the leash.
A ninth-century pre-Romanesque masterpiece on the slopes of Monte Naranco, next to San Miguel de Lillo. Leashed dogs enjoy the hillside and the views over the town, though the interior of the monument is not open to them.
An arcaded square in the old town, home to a lively market and lined with terraces. You stroll here on the leash amid the stalls, the popular heart of Oviedo for centuries.
A large central park with shaded avenues, the green lung of the city a short walk from the cathedral. Leashed dogs are welcome along its paths, fountains and flower beds.
The boulevard of cider, lined with sidrerías where Asturian cider is poured from a height. The terraces are very tolerant of well-behaved leashed dogs, with a guaranteed convivial atmosphere.
A spectacular massif under an hour from Oviedo, with trails, the Covadonga lakes and green gorges. A day trip where leashed dogs enjoy the mountain paths and the fresh air.
