Mahón

The great natural harbour that gives the town its name, lined with a lively quay of restaurants and excursion boats. Leashed dogs happily follow the waterside promenade in the morning shade.

Old Mahon, with its white lanes, churches and the broad Placa de s'Esplanada at the heart of town. Leashed dogs wander freely through the streets and across the plane-tree-shaded square.

The Xoriguer distillery on the quay, keeper of the Menorcan gin inherited from the British occupation. The shop and tasting room are indoors and do not admit dogs, but you can take turns for a quick stop.

The nineteenth-century fortress guarding the harbour mouth, on a windswept headland. The open-air site can be visited with a leashed dog, among ramparts, tunnels and sea views.

The historic GR-223 trail that circles Menorca over 185 kilometres, through coves, cliffs and pine woods. Leashed dogs are in their element here; carry water, as shade and water points are scarce in summer.

The small harbour of Cales Fonts, in neighbouring Es Castell, where old fishermen's boathouses have become terraces. Leashed dogs are welcome on the outdoor terraces, especially at sunset.
