Dog Walks in Venice

The Giardini Pubblici in the Castello sestiere is Venice's main public garden and the only significant green space on the main island. Dogs are welcome on-leash throughout the gardens. The garden is home to the Venice Biennale pavilions and has shaded tree-lined paths, a small café, and benches. It is small by mainland standards but genuinely valuable in Venice's context. The atmosphere is very local and relaxed.

The Lido di Venezia is a long narrow barrier island accessible by vaporetto from Venice. Unlike the main island, the Lido has streets, cars, and — crucially — a pine forest (Pineta) along the western Adriatic shore that is excellent for dog walks. The cycle path running the length of the island also makes it a great option for dog owners. The Lido has more open space than the main island by far.

Campo San Polo is the largest campo in Venice after Piazza San Marco and is one of the most dog-friendly. On weekend evenings and Sunday mornings, it fills with local families and their dogs. No garden, but a large open space paved in the Venetian style where dogs are walked on-leash and children play. Several cafés around the campo edge welcome dogs on their outdoor tables.

For guests staying on the Mestre mainland (or willing to take a short bus or walk from Venice), Parco San Giuliano is a 74-hectare waterfront park on the Lagoon with cycle paths, dog-friendly areas, and genuine open space. It is the best option for dogs needing a real run rather than the limited space of Venice's main island. Several dog areas and off-leash sections are designated within the park.
