Born at a crossroads of rivers, Treviso grew on the springs of the Sile and the branches of the Cagnan, which its citizens tamed into canals, mills and washhouses from the Middle Ages. A free commune and then a loyal possession of Venice from 1339, it adopted the Serenissima's art of living: frescoed arcades, Gothic palaces and a fish market held since 1856 on its own island. Its 16th-century walls, raised by Venice, still ring the centre. Heavily bombed on Good Friday 1944, it rebuilt itself with care and discretion. Today the capital of red radicchio, the birthplace of tiramisu and the gateway to the UNESCO Prosecco hills, Treviso offers the Venetian atmosphere without the crush: a city of water and arcades discovered entirely on foot, much to every dog's delight.
Treviso's civic drawing room, dominated by the 13th-century Palazzo dei Trecento and extended by the Calmaggiore arcades towards the Duomo. Everything happens outdoors, on a leash, especially at aperitivo time when the terraces overflow.
The little island on the Cagnan canal has hosted the fish market since 1856, amid willows and waterside facades. Browse the morning stalls on a short leash, then follow the Buranelli canal, the most photographed view in town.
The old Sile towpath leaves the walls and runs, flat and car-free, towards Casier and the river's regional park. It is Treviso's great dog walk, busy with cyclists at weekends: keep a short leash and the right-hand edge of the path.
The 16th-century Venetian rampart belt, lined with water and trees, forms a shaded promenade around the centre. The full circuit makes a fine leashed loop of about an hour, cool even in summer.
A 67-hectare spring-water park north-east of town, where the Storga rises among meadows, woods and old farmsteads. Flat gravel trails, on a leash: this is a wildlife protection area, so keep clear of nesting zones.
The UNESCO Conegliano-Valdobbiadene hills start 20 minutes north: vine-striped ridges, hamlets and panoramic lanes. Vineyard paths on a leash and tastings at family wineries, which often accept calm dogs if you phone ahead.
