Getting to Sylt & Around with Pets

The car-train that carries vehicles across the Hindenburgdamm between Niebüll on the mainland and Westerland, since there is no road connection to Sylt. The crossing takes around 35 minutes and no reservation is needed. Your dog travels free of charge and simply stays in the car with you, which makes it one of the least stressful ways to bring a pet to any island. The Niebüll terminal has a small fenced dog-relief area, useful after a long drive.

For foot passengers, Deutsche Bahn runs regional and long-distance trains directly onto Sylt across the Hindenburgdamm causeway to Westerland station, connecting the island to Hamburg and the wider German network. Under DB rules, small dogs in a closed carrier travel free as hand luggage. Larger dogs that do not fit in a carrier pay half the second-class fare and must be leashed and muzzled on board. Westerland station is central and an easy walk or short bus ride from the seafront.

The Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) runs the island bus network linking Westerland with List, Kampen, Wenningstedt, Rantum, Hörnum and the eastern villages, with frequent services in summer. The buses are the practical way to reach the more distant dog beaches and nature reserves without a car. Leashed dogs are carried; small dogs in a carrier generally travel free, while larger dogs may need a ticket, so check the current SVG fare rules. Buses can be busy at peak beach times, so travel early with a nervous dog.
