Dog-Friendly Beaches in Sylt

The designated dog beach at the northern end of Westerland, reached by the Nordseeklinik beach crossing, is the most convenient stretch of sand for anyone staying in the island's main town. It is a wide, open beach with plenty of room for dogs to enjoy the surf and sand, and it is an easy walk from the Westerland promenade and station. In Westerland dogs are directed to these designated sections rather than the central bathing beaches, and a leash is required in the peak season. Off-season, the whole beach is quieter and rules relax.

Kampen's dog beach in the Buhne 16 area is one of the most scenic on Sylt, backed by the glowing ochre-red face of the Rotes Kliff, the island's most famous natural landmark. It sits within a naturist section of beach, and the sand and surf are wonderful for dogs. Kampen keeps a leash requirement on its dog beaches, so this is a place for a beautiful leashed walk rather than off-lead running in season. A second Kampen dog beach lies to the south at the Sturmhaube crossing.

In the far north, the village of List has a dog beach on the Weststrand a few hundred metres south of beach access 17 (the textile beach), with a second section near the nudist beach. This is a big, wild, wind-swept beach with a real sense of remoteness at the top of the island. One important local rule: throughout the List area, and especially out on the Ellenbogen where sheep graze freely, dogs must be kept on the lead all year, not only in the bathing season.
