Aarhus: history & character

Aarhus, founded by the Vikings around 770, was a major Kattegat trading port for a thousand years. It is Denmark's second city with 360,000 inhabitants, European Capital of Culture in 2017, and a student city (50,000 students) that gives it a young energy. The harbour has been transformed into an innovation district: Dokk1, the Iceberg, Aarhus Ø — contemporary architectural icons that complement the cobbled alleys of the Latin Quarter and the 13th-century cathedral.
