Aarhus: history & character

Aarhus, founded by the Vikings around 770, was a major Kattegat trading port for a thousand years. It is Denmark's second city with 360,000 inhabitants, European Capital of Culture in 2017, and a student city (50,000 students) that gives it a young energy. The harbour has been transformed into an innovation district: Dokk1, the Iceberg, Aarhus Ø, contemporary architectural icons that complement the cobbled alleys of the Latin Quarter and the 13th-century cathedral. For dog owners, Aarhus is an exceptional discovery: free public transport across the entire Letbanen + Midttrafik network, 8 official off-leash forests including Marselisborg Hundeskov (25 ha) reachable in 15 min by bus, year-round dog beaches at Bellevue Strand, and a Danish hygge café culture that naturally welcomes dogs indoors from October. The city also has two 24/7 emergency veterinary clinics (AniCura and Evidensia), rare for a city this size.
