Pet-Friendly Attractions in Sylt

The Red Cliff at Kampen is Sylt's most famous natural landmark, a roughly 30-metre-high wall of glowing red-ochre moraine running for around four kilometres along the west coast. A clifftop path and the beach below both make superb leashed dog walks, especially in the low light of morning or evening when the cliff face burns red. The nearby Uwe-Düne, the island's highest point, gives a panoramic view over the whole of Sylt for those who climb its wooden steps.

The tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are one of Sylt's great natural spectacles, an ever-changing landscape of mud, sand and channels that appears and disappears with the tides. Guided mudflat walks (Wattwanderungen) set off from Hörnum and the east coast, and some operators welcome well-behaved leashed dogs. This is a protected area, so a lead is required at all times and you should keep well clear of nesting and resting birds. Never venture onto the flats without a guide, the tides are fast and dangerous.

Often called the green heart of Sylt, Keitum is a village of thatched Frisian captains' houses set among old trees on the sheltered east coast, a world away from the windswept west-coast beaches. Its lanes, gardens and the low path along the Wadden Sea shore make a gentle, pretty walk with a dog, ideal on a wild-weather day when the open beaches are too exposed. Cafés and tea rooms in the village generally welcome dogs on their terraces.
