Split is one of the most dog-welcoming cities on the Adriatic coast. The relaxed Dalmatian culture, the outdoor dining scene, and the Marjan Hill forest make it an excellent destination for dog owners. Key things to know: beach restrictions in season, summer heat management, and the ferry options for island day trips with your dog.
Split in July and August reaches 35–38°C. Walk dogs only before 09:00 and after 19:00. The stone and marble of Diocletian's Palace interior gets dangerously hot by midday, avoid with your dog. Use Marjan Hill's shaded pine forest for all summer walks. Always carry water. Never leave a dog in a parked car.
Dogs must be on-leash in all public spaces in Split. Dog waste must be picked up, enforcement is increasing in the tourist areas. Dogs are banned from main beaches June 1–October 1. Certain dog breeds classified as dangerous under Croatian law require a muzzle in all public spaces at all times.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal. Mild weather, full beach access in spring, full beach access after restrictions lift in October. Summer is beautiful but hot and extremely crowded. Winter (November–March) is quiet, mild (10–15°C), and the Old Town is mostly locals-only.
Brač island (45 min ferry) is excellent with dogs, Bol village has a coastal promenade and the famous Zlatni Rat beach is accessible off-season. Šolta island is smaller and quieter, also reachable by ferry. Dogs are permitted on Jadrolinija ferries with a muzzle. Buy tickets at the Split ferry terminal or online at jadrolinija.hr.
