Spa gave the world its name: the very word spa comes from this small town in the Belgian Ardennes, in the province of Liège. Its mineral springs, the pouhons, have drawn cure-takers and crowned heads since the 16th century, and Peter the Great took the waters at the pouhon that now bears his name. Nicknamed the Cafe of Europe in the 18th century, Spa became the model for every watering-place, culminating in its 2021 UNESCO World Heritage listing among the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Today around 10,000 people live in a wooded valley, between the covered galleries of the Parc de Sept Heures, the Lac de Warfaaz and the vast Hautes Fagnes plateau. For a dog it is an easy, green destination: forests, moorland trails and a lake are all walkable on a leash minutes from the centre, even if the Thermes themselves stay off-limits to animals.
An 1890 dammed lake at the gates of Spa, ringed by a surfaced path about 600 metres long. It is the go-to dog walk: flat, easy, with points where a leashed dog can drink and lakeside cafe terraces to pause.
The town-centre park, famous for its long 19th-century covered galleries. Flat and sheltered, it is the ideal place to walk a leashed dog and stay dry on a wet Ardennes day, lawns and mature trees included.
Belgium's largest nature reserve, a plateau of peat bog, heather and boardwalks crowned by the Signal de Botrange (694 m). Dogs are welcome on a leash, but banned outright from the signposted core zones.
Spa's most famous mineral spring, under an 1880 pavilion that also houses the tourist office. Named for Tsar Peter the Great, it is central to the UNESCO heritage; a calm leashed dog may enter at staff discretion.
The emblematic modern baths on the hillside above the centre, reached by a panoramic funicular. Heir to the mineral-water tradition, they do not admit dogs, so plan for one person to mind the dog during the visit.
The legendary Formula 1 circuit a few kilometres from town, popular as a day-trip. It is outside Spa and dog access is restricted on race days, so treat it mainly as a landmark and a drive-out outing.
