Spa is an easy, low-key place to travel with a dog: small, green and ringed by forest, with sensible rules and friendly locals. A few things are worth knowing before you go, from the leash law in the fragile Fagnes to the fact that the famous Thermes are one place your dog cannot follow you. Pack for cool, changeable Ardennes weather even in summer, and remember that this upland moorland is tick country.
Dogs must be leashed in Spa's parks and across the Hautes Fagnes. In the reserve they are banned entirely from the strict core zones, which are signposted, to protect nesting birds and fragile peat bog. Stay on the marked boardwalk trails, keep your dog close, and never let it onto the open bog.
Dogs are not admitted inside the Thermes de Spa, its pools, wellness areas or restaurant, as at wellness venues everywhere, so plan for one member of the party to stay with the dog, or use a local sitter. The baths are reached by a panoramic funicular from town; confirm dog access with the operator before boarding. Ardennes weather is cool and wet, so summer heat is rarely a danger, but always carry water on the exposed Fagnes trails.
The Fagnes and Ardennes woodland are classic tick habitat, so use tick prevention and check your dog thoroughly after every walk, especially around the ears, neck and paws. Rain is common year-round, so a towel and a drying coat for your dog are genuinely useful. A leashed dog and a covered gallery in the Parc de Sept Heures make a wet afternoon easy.
