Dog-Friendly Waterfronts & Lakes near Sofia

A 4 km mountain reservoir on the eastern edge of Sofia, the closest open swimming spot for dogs. The free public sections of the south shore allow leashed (and informally off-leash) dogs all year; in summer, the lake's busier paid lido restricts pets but the surrounding forest tracks remain open. Bus 1/3 from the city centre runs to the south entry every 20 minutes.

A 20-metre waterfall reached by a 2 km marked forest trail starting at the Boyana church. The water is cold even in August, the shaded canyon a relief for dogs in summer. Dogs on leash are welcome on the trail and in the splash pool at the base; the church itself is closed to non-assistance pets.

Bulgaria's largest reservoir, 40 km east of Sofia in the Iskar river valley, with several sandy informal beaches that locals use for full-day excursions. Dogs are welcome year-round on the south and west shores; the most accessible point is at Pasarel, reachable by car or weekend shuttle bus. Open swimming, but check water-temperature warnings in early summer.
