Bucharest became Romania's capital in 1862, after the union of the Wallachian and Moldavian principalities. Nicknamed "Little Paris" in the 1920s for its Belle Époque palaces along Calea Victoriei, the city lived through Ceaușescu's dictatorship — which razed a sixth of the historic core to build the Palace of the Parliament — and is today the EU's sixth-largest capital with about 1.8 million inhabitants. Romanian dog culture is open but regulated: municipalities require leashes in town, but Bucharest has the country's largest network of fenced dog parks — two inside Herastrau Park alone (187 hectares north of the centre). Veterinary care is among the cheapest in the EU, dog-friendly hotels start at €60, and Romania's largest 24-hour vet hospital (Pet Stuff, now part of the LuxVet group) is 20 minutes by taxi from the Old Town.
Bucharest's historic core, cobbled streets lined with neo-Brâncovenesc townhouses and ruined churches, with the 15th-century Curtea Veche (Vlad the Impaler's former residence). The whole district is leash-friendly and pedestrianised in the evenings.
The city's historic spine, 2.7 km from Splaiul Independenței up to Piața Victoriei, lined with 19th-century palaces, the Romanian Athenaeum and the Royal Palace (National Art Museum). Leashed dogs welcome the entire length.
Bucharest's largest park (187 ha) around Herastrau Lake, with two fenced municipal dog parks and a 6 km lakeside loop. Metro Aviatorilor station at the gate.
Bucharest's oldest public garden (1854), 17 hectares in the heart of the city with a small lake, mature plane trees, and a bandstand café. Leashed dogs welcome day and night.
Outdoor ethnographic museum on the Herastrau lakefront, with 270 historic Romanian houses, churches, and farms relocated from across the country. Leashed dogs welcome throughout the open-air park.
17 km natural lake 40 km north of Bucharest, inside the Snagov Natural Park. Pine and oak forest on the south shore where leashed dogs can swim year-round outside the commercial lido zones.
