Santiago de Compostela emerged in the 9th century from the alleged discovery of the apostle James's tomb, swiftly becoming one of medieval Christendom's three great pilgrimages alongside Rome and Jerusalem. Its baroque-Romanesque cathedral, its four granite-vaulted squares and its UNESCO-listed historic centre (1985) are the outcome of a thousand years of walking: pilgrims, their donkeys and their dogs shaped an exceptionally accommodating culture for travellers with animals. The city is also Galicia's capital, a green region with a North-Atlantic climate, which explains its 1500 mm annual rainfall and resolutely Celtic-Iberian feel: bagpipes, pulpo á feira, and heather in bloom.
The monumental square that serves as the Camino's finishing line, framed by the baroque cathedral facade, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos (Spain's oldest hotel), and the Pazo de Raxoi. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the square and in the three adjoining ones (Praterías, Quintana, Inmaculada).
The city's main public park, a Belle Époque promenade rising south of the old town, with the Carballeira de Santa Susana oak grove and the city's best view of the cathedral spires. The municipality has designated a dedicated off-leash dog zone within the oak grove.
A serene terraced park behind the former Dominican convent, now the Galician Museum of the People, with hydrangea beds, a wooded grove and the old monastic cemetery on the upper lawn. The viewpoint is arguably the city's finest urban panorama of the cathedral.
A green amphitheatre sloping below the Belvís convent, with formal labyrinth gardens above and a walled off-leash dog zone at the southern end, one of the safest enclosed off-leash spots in central Santiago.
Galicia's most important food market, granite halls with open arcades (1937) housing fishmongers, butchers and pulperías. Leashed dogs are welcome on the outdoor arcade and at the pet-friendly cafés directly facing the market on Praza de Abastos.
Peter Eisenman's monumental architectural complex atop Monte Gaiás, with wave-roofed granite-clad buildings, opened in 2011. Exterior plazas and rooftop paths are open to leashed dogs day and night, with panoramic views back over the historic centre.
