Getting Around Porto with Your Dog

CP urban train lines serving Porto allow dogs to travel free of charge. Dogs must be kept on a short leash and accompanied by an up-to-date vaccination record including microchip ID. Small dogs in appropriate carriers travel free with no additional conditions. On intercity trains (Alfa Pendular, Intercidades), dogs require a full ticket; on Regional/InterRegional trains, a half-fare ticket. PDD breeds are prohibited on all services. Porto Metro and STCP city buses allow only small dogs transported in a backpack or enclosed carrier. Dogs must not be visible outside the carrier. PDD breed dogs are prohibited entirely, regardless of carrier. This limits practical dog transport on metro and bus to dogs under approximately 6–8 kg. For larger dogs, CP trains are the only public transport option. Historic trams (lines 1, 18, 22) apply the same carrier-only rule as the metro.
