Coimbra, Portugal's third city and its medieval capital from 1131 to 1255, owes its modern fame to the University of Coimbra — founded in 1290 by King Dinis, one of Europe's oldest continuously operating universities. Listed by UNESCO in 2013 as 'Coimbra — Alta and Sofia', the city packs into a compact historic centre masterpieces spanning nine centuries: the Romanesque Sé Velha (1184), the Baroque Joanina Library (1717), the Santa Cruz monastery (12th c.) and the iconic black student cape. Set on a hill rising from the Mondego, Coimbra is best explored on foot with a leashed dog — cobbles, stairways (Quebra-Costas means 'back-breaker') and shaded terraces. Just 1h45 from Lisbon and 1h15 from Porto by Alfa Pendular train, it's among Portugal's most dog-friendly cities thanks to relaxed student culture and the Mata do Choupal — 78 hectares of riparian forest 10 minutes west of the centre.
Founded 1290, UNESCO-listed since 2013. The outdoor Paço das Escolas courtyard at the top of the hill welcomes leashed dogs. Interior tours (Joanina Library, Royal Palace) remain ticketed and off-limits to pets.
Fortress-like Romanesque cathedral consecrated 1184. Dogs not allowed inside (except assistance dogs), but the cobbled square in front is one of the city's prettiest outdoor spots.
78 ha riparian forest along the Mondego west of the centre — poplars, ash, willows and a 5 km loop trail. The most popular dog walking spot in Coimbra.
Curved pedestrian bridge (2007) linking the two banks of the Parque Verde do Mondego. Unbeatable view of the old town skyline at sunset. Open 24/7 to dogs.
Founded 1772, one of Europe's oldest university botanical gardens. Terraced grounds, rare trees, bamboo grove. Leashed dogs welcome in the outdoor areas (not in the greenhouses).
14th-century historic gardens linked to the Pedro and Inês de Castro legend — the 'Fountain of Loves' and 'Fountain of Tears' are accessible to visitors and leashed dogs.
