Pamplona (Iruña in Basque), capital of Navarra (~205,000 inhabitants), was founded by the Romans in 75 BC as Pompaelo. Capital of the medieval Kingdom of Navarra (824-1620) before its absorption by Castile, the city retains a historic centre fully ringed by walls built by Philip II in the 16th century. Hemingway made it world-famous through The Sun Also Rises (1926), based on his annual visits to San Fermines (6-14 July), the bull-running festival where he stayed at the Gran Hotel La Perla from 1923 to 1959. Pamplona is also a major Camino de Santiago stop on the French route. For travellers with a dog, it is one of Northern Spain's easiest cities: 28-ha Citadel park with fenced off-leash zone, 11 km Río Arga greenway, relaxed pintxo bars on terraces, mild summers (22°C average). Only exception: avoid San Fermines (1M+ visitors, constant fireworks).
Star-shaped Renaissance citadel built by Philip II in 1571 — Spain's most intact. 28 ha free-entry park with fenced off-leash dog zone in the south-west.
Pamplona's central square, dominated by the Belle Époque Café Iruña (1888) where Hemingway wrote. Iconic terrace, leashed dogs welcome on the square and outdoor café.
11 km of car-free greenway along the Arga river around the old town. Flat, shaded, with three medieval bridges. The Pamploneses' daily dog walk.
Late Gothic cathedral (14th-15th c.) with Neoclassical façade (1799). Dogs not allowed inside (except assistance dogs), but the surrounding Plaza Santa María is accessible.
500 m pedestrian street where the encierro bull-run passes each morning 7-14 July. Outside the festival, it is Pamplona's densest pintxo street with 20+ bars in 400 m. Leashed dogs welcome year-round except during San Fermines.
Japanese-inspired park (1997) in partnership with twin-city Yamaguchi (Japan). 8.5 ha of cherry trees, koi pond, observatory hill. Leashed dogs welcome.
